Many Islamic figures who play an important role in the science of commentary, they wrote several books that can be studied today, without the science of interpretation we may not know what the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an are. or the method used by mufassir scholars in interpreting the Qur'an, including using 2 methods:
1.Tafsir bil matsur
The bil matsur interpretation method is a method that is carried out by relying on the Qur'an, the hadith of the prophet, and the ijtihad of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad Saw
2. Interpretation of beer ra'yi
The method of
Tafsir bir ra'yi is a method that is carried out by relying on ra'yi (mind) or
personal opinion.
Among the many scholars of commentators, there are several
scholars who are famous and their books are often used as references for
Muslims, especially religious institutions such as Islamic boarding schools,
ta'lim assemblies, etc.
A. Imam ath-Tabari
The first is
Imam ath-Tabari, he was born in 224 H in Tabaristan, has the full name of Abu
Ja'far Muhammad bin Jarir bin Yazid bin Katsir bin Ghalib bin Ath-Tabari. Imam
Ath-Tabari excels in various sciences, including: Hadith, Tafsir, Qiraat and
History.His excellence cannot be separated from his long learning
process, at a young age he traveled to seek knowledge to various regions and
places such as Iraq, Syria and Egypt.
Because of his breadth of knowledge and depth of knowledge,
he earned the titles "Abu Tafsir" (Father of Tafsir) and "Abu Li
Date of Islam" (Father of Islamic History).
His famous books include:
- al-qira'at book
- he book of ikhtilaful ulama
- book at-tafsir
- adadu wa al-tanzil book
The book of composition in the field of interpretation is
the book of Jami al-bayan fi exegesis of the Qur'an or better known as
Tafābari's interpretation.
Imam ath-Tabari died in Baghdad in 310 H, at the age of 76
years. Allahummagfirlahu war hamhu wa a'fihi wa'fu anhu amen.
B.Imam ibn Kathir
The second is Imam
ibn Kathir, born in 710 H in a part of the city of Basrah in the area of
Sham. His full name is Imaddudin Ismail bin Umar bin Kathir bin Al-Qurasyi
al-Buhrawi ad-dimasyqi. He is called "Abu Firda". ".
When he was 4 years
old, his father died and he was raised by his uncle.At the age of 5 years moved
from the place of his birth and settled in Damasqus.In Damasqus he was active
in seeking knowledge, studying with scholars in the city, including Sheikh
Burhanuddin Ibrahim al-Fazari, Ibn Taymiyah, Ibn Zarrad and so on.Because of
his enthusiasm for learning and his tenacity, it is no wonder that he became a
scholar of commentary, expert on hadith, historian and well-known fiqh expert
in the 8th century H.His book "Tafsir al-qr'an al-adzim" is the most
authentic and largest book to date.
According to most scholars, Ibn Kathir's interpretation is the best interpretation available at this time because it contains many features, such as the interpretation of the Qur'an with the Qur'an (verse with another verse), the Qur'an with as-sunnah, al-qur'an with the words of the salaf pious scholars (friends and tabi'in). He also wrote several books that are of very high quality and become references today, among other
